Cannes

Cannes is a glamorous and expensive seaside town considered to be the definitive Riviera resort, and one of the social hubs of Europe. The Cannes Film Festival takes place each year in May.

Cannes is located about 26 km (16 mi) to the west of Nice, and is one of the best known cities of the French Riviera. It is famous for being the host of the annual Cannes Film Festival held in May. It is also famous for its luxury shops, restaurants and hotels. The prestigious seaside promenade, La Croisette, stretches the whole length of Cannes' coastline. La Croisette is known for picturesque beaches, restaurants, cafés and boutiques.

For many visitors, the main tourist attraction in Cannes is its long sandy beaches, such as Calao Plage, the Plage du Majestic and the Plage du Martinez. Most of the beaches are private, which means you have to pay to get access.

The beautiful old district of La Suquet (the Old Town) has narrow winding streets with restaurants and souvenir shops. The view from the castle ruins at the top is excellent. Rue Maynard, is probably the best area for dining in Cannes. You can dine outdoors with a stunning view of the town below, and in the backstreets of the Rue de Antibes, you can find some reasonable dining options. The most popular restaurants to eat at are all along the seafront, but these restaurants tend to be rather expensive.

The Old Port, Le Vieux Port, is adjacent to La Suquet district. In the port you can admire the yachts, although true mega-yachts will be found further down the coast in Antibes.

Îles de Lérins are two islands in the bay worth visiting. The islands are very beautiful and a great place to go swimming or snorkeling. The smaller of the two islands, Saint Honorat has a monastery and a ruined castle. The monks sell monastery made food/drink products. The larger island is Saint Marguerite which also has a castle, shops, bars and restaurants. To get there, take one of the boats which depart near the famous Palais des Festivals on La Croisette, where stars of the screen gather during the Cannes Film Festival.
